Edgar Degas (1834 – 1917) was realist and a naturalist painter that also produced bronze sculptures, prints and drawings. The French artist is considered to be one of the founders of the impressionism as well as one of the best draftsman that had an extraordinary ability to depict movement and life, especially in his works with ballet dancers, horse racings and nudes. His portraits are very much appreciated for the psychologic complexity and the feeling of truth that they transmit. Degas drew ballet dancers in all type of positions: training, on stage, getting dressed and in everything that they made, focusing on the effort that they made and their focus. A good example of this is “Bailarina Basculando” (1877- 1897) currently in the National Museum of Thyssen Bornemisza in Madrid. |
