Joaquin Sorolla (1863 – 1923) was a Spanish painter. Impressionist, post-impressionist and luminist of international renowned. He peaked at the end of the 19th century and the beginnings of the 20th century leaving more than 2.200 artworks.

In 1911, the artist decided to design his own house and garden in Madrid. The plants that were chosen to decorate depended on their colours (roses, oleanders, azaleas, hydrangeas and lilacs) with many white, rose and violet tones. Many of the plants, trees, tiles and statues came from the south of Spain.
