Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh (1853 – 1890) was a dutch painter and one of the greatest post-impressionism artist.

He drew around 900 paintings and more than 1600 drawings. Van Gogh was a self-taught person. In his first works his pallet had mainly dark and earthy tones. Light and having preference por more lively colours happened later when he moved to the south of France where he achieved fullness in his stay in Arles in 1888.

The last years of Van Gogh comprehend of problems with psychiatric illnesses that had him be secluded in the sanatory of Saint-Remy-de-Provence. At that time in his work we star to see these spirals which we can appreciate in the “Starry Night” (1889). Inspired in the Japanese woodcut, he drew at that time “Almond blossoms” (1890).

The quality of his work was only recognised after he passed away in a retrospective exposition in 1890 that considered him one of the greatest masters in the history of paintings. He influenced greatly in this world to others especially German expressionist and fauvists like Matisse, Derain, Vlaminck and Kees van Dongen.
